Sonic Rituals: My Headphone Journey Through Remote Work

In remote work, sound isn’t just ambiance, it’s infrastructure. Every call, edit, brainstorm, and late-night script session carries its own sonic fingerprint. Over time, I’ve tested headphones that didn’t just deliver audio, they shaped how I work, create, and occasionally survive back-to-back Zoom marathons. This post walks through the gear that’s supported my workflow—from workspace consulting to cinematic storytelling.

🎙️ Phase 1: Wired Foundations

🎧 Standard Earbuds: The Starting Point

My journey began with the classic wired earbuds, the kind that come bundled with your phone and somehow always end up in a drawer full of tangled tech. They were simple, reliable, and got me through early coaching calls and workspace planning sessions. While they weren’t built for marathon workflows, they laid the groundwork for what I needed most: clarity and consistency.

🎮 Logitech G733: Gaming Power Meets Work Reality

Next came the Logitech G733 LIGHTSPEED headset, originally part of my gaming setup. With immersive sound, customizable RGB lighting, and a mic that made me sound like I had a podcast, even when I was just saying “Can everyone mute?” It brought serious depth to my workspace. I used it for work and gaming. The surround sound was cinematic, the mic filters were crisp, and the headset looked like it belonged in a spaceship. While it elevated my creative sessions, its bold design and size weren’t exactly subtle for daily calls or mobile work.  Even though they weren’t a great aesthetic for work, they are still my go to for gaming.

🔊 Phase 2: Wireless Exploration

🥇 Bose Headphones 700: Enhanced Focus

To streamline my setup, I moved into wireless territory with the Bose QuietComfort series. These headphones created a bubble of concentration so effectively I once missed a fire alarm (true story, not recommended). The noise cancellation was deep, the audio was rich, and the comfort lasted through full day editing sessions. They were ideal for workspace breakdowns and scripting marathons. For high-profile meetings, though, their presence felt a bit… commanding.

🍏 AirPods Pro 2: Efficient Versatility

Looking for something more discreet, I brought in the AirPods Pro. Sleek, portable, and always ready to pair, unless you’re on a PC, in which case they occasionally ghost you like a bad Tinder date. I used them for walks, quick calls, and mobile editing. Transparency Mode was a lifesaver when I needed to hear both my surroundings and my own voice. They became my go-to for multitasking, though I did spend a fair amount of time asking, “Can you hear me now?” I’m not sure if it was my work laptop’s (Dell) lousy Bluetooth, or just windows connectivity in general, but I was constantly having people tell me I sounded like Mr. Roboto.

🔁 Phase 3: Wired Integration

🎧 USB-C Headphones

Eventually, I circled back to wired headphones. Wireless had its perks, but Teams calls started feeling like a roulette wheel of audio dropouts and mic malfunctions. I needed reliability, and surprisingly, the simplest wired earbuds turned out to be the most dependable. No pairing. No firmware updates. No drama. They plugged in, worked, and kept me sounding like a professional, even when I was wearing pajama pants.  I did upgrade from the 3.5mm classic plugin to a pair with a USB-C connection.

🎯 Sound as Strategy

Headphones aren’t accessories, they’re workflow tools. They shape focus, enhance communication, and support creative output. Each model I’ve used played a role in my remote work evolution, from cinematic editing to coaching sessions. Sound is part of the strategy and the gear we choose reflects how we build, think, and occasionally talk to ourselves during long render times.
